An objectively good thing happened in large-hearted tech Thursday: Microsoft said it will require firms that afford it with subcontractors–think cafeteria and custodial staff–to give those workers 12 weeks of paid parental leave. In doing so, Microsoft is once again taking the lead in ensuring contractors get assistances that other big companies reserve for full-time employees.
Back in 2015, Microsoft began expecting its suppliers to give their employees 15 dates of paid vacation and sick leave annually. That motivated other tech companionships like Facebook to follow suit. Labor counsels hope Microsoft’s brand-new parental leave programme stimulates a similar trend.
Thursday’s announcement constructs off that the project works. “This change applies to all parents employed by our suppliers who take time off for birth certificates or adoption of a child. The new policy applies to suppliers with more than 50 employees and extends supplier employees who perform substantial work for Microsoft, ” wrote Microsoft VP and General Counsel Dev Stahlkopf in a blog berth. It will not include anyone else who contract with Microsoft themselves.
These workers will be guaranteed 66 percent of their wages or up to $1,000 a month for 3 month. Microsoft notes that this policy will be a minimum requirement; if local rules require a most generous leave box, boss will need to adhere to that. Paid parental leave has been shown to help everyone–children, mothers, and boss, which retain works at a higher charge if they offer it.

That Microsoft is asking not only maternity leave, but paternity leave as well is most important. “Taking paternity leave leads to greater gender equality within the household, and that, of course, realizes it easier for the mother to return to work, ” Eileen Appelbaum, an economist and co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, tells WIRED. She says experiment indicates leaders who are able to bail with their children in those early months end up being more involved in their lives forever.
