In its heyday , nothing of us considered that someday we were able to yearn for the heated, furry colours of VHS. But we too never was believed that someday united yearn for the crackling of cassettes, the spotty, full-bodied heat of vinyl, or the impermanence of Betamax?( None wants for Betamax .)
It does establish me wonder about all the apparently immaterial stuffs were forgetting to notice about our current generational formats. Will we someday search lovingly upon the brief instants of buffering before the occasional Spotify stream? The delightful physical nature of our Blu-ray discs? Likely. We are nostalgic people. The one thing I know for sure is the fact that it VHS-basedInstagram history is awesome.
VHSDude is simple: Some unknown force collecting non-sequitur times from ancient, worthless tapes and uploading them to the Internet, seven seconds of a hour. There are hopelessly out-of-touch anti-drug PSAs 😛 TAGEND
Theres cast-off church gift-shop detritus like Bible Man.
Some of them have Cher.
Or a confused George Clooney.
And … whatever waking nightmare this is.
But by far, my own personal favorite berths are the mostly silent times of insignium pre-rolls. You know, like the few seconds it takes for the Disney logo to show up and do its situation before Lion King or whatever.
I had no feeling that I was someone predisposed to enjoy far and away the least-considered moment of any VHS tape, but theres a genuine allure to the bleed, cheap-tech swagger of, say, the Lightning Video introduction.
Occasionally I get worried that were establishing more content than we can ever hope to preserve. When Google Docs was down a week ago, I thoughts a nature where unexpectedly we grew unburdened of all the digital information balancing on servers around the world. What would we do? Theres no way we can remember every inessential nuance to modern life! But until that day of reckoning comes, weve get people like VHSDude, doing sure the worthless garbage of yesterday is the wistful worthless scrap of today. Photo via Violet Auld/ Flickr( CC BY 2.0 )
